BC Crane Operator Practical Test

The BC Crane Operator Practical Test allows operators to demonstrate that they have the knowledge and skills required to safely operate a crane.

Upon passing the test, the operator will be certified for a specific crane classification and will receive a BC Crane Operator designation.

Do you have a successful Practical Test result already for a given crane classification? In British Columbia, Practical Test results from Fulford Certification, or any Canadian provincial or territorial regulatory body are generally recognized. In addition, USA Practical Test results are recognized from NCCER, NCCCO, and OECP and Irish Practical Test results from SOLAS Ireland are also recognized. BC also recognizes crane operator credentials from all of these jurisdictions.

Written Theory Exam

Operators applying for the following crane classifications must successfully complete the provincial Certification of Qualification exam before applying for a practical test:

• Mobile Crane (includes):
  • Lattice Boom – Friction
  • Lattice Boom – Hydraulic
  • Hydraulic – Unlimited Tonnage
• Hydraulic – 80 Tonnes & Under
• Stiff Boom – Unlimited Tonnage
• Folding Boom – Unlimited Tonnage
• Tower Crane

Practical Test – General

The practical test is designed to test an operator’s crane handling skills. Topics examined include hand signals, pre-operational inspection, crane set up and hazard assessment, and crane operation (with and without load).

Practical Test – Mobile Crane Operator

In order to qualify for a Mobile Crane Operator – Full Scope licence, an operator must have successfully completed the appropriate exam(s) and a practical test. The practical test must be taken on one of: lattice friction crane (minimum of 100 feet of boom length), lattice hydraulic crane, or mobile hydraulic crane with a lifting capacity over 80 tonnes.

In addition, an operator must have a minimum of 1600 hours of mobile crane operating time of which 400 hours must be on one or more of lattice friction, lattice hydraulic, or a mobile hydraulic crane over 80 tonnes.
